چکیده

The measurement or constraint of the masses of neutron stars and their binary companions tests theories of neutron star structure and of pulsar formation and evolution. We have measured the rate of the general relativistic advance of the longitude of periastron for the pulsar PSR B1802−07: ω̇ = 0. 060 ± 0. 009 yr, which implies a total system mass, pulsar plus companion star, of M = 1.7 ± 0.4M⊙. We also present a much improved measurement of the rate of periastron advance for PSR B2303+46: ω̇ = 0. 0099 ± 0. 0002 yr, implying M = 2.53 ± 0.08M⊙ for this system. We discuss the available constraints on distribution of mass between the pulsars and their companions, and we compare the pulsar masses with other determinations of neutron star masses. Subject headings: pulsars — stars: binaries — stars: neutron — stars: individual (PSR B1802−07 — PSR B2303+46)

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

Upper Limits on the Rates of Binary Neutron Star and Neutron Star–black Hole Mergers from Advanced Ligo’s First Observing Run

We report here the non-detection of gravitational waves from the merger of binary–neutron star systems and neutron star–black hole systems during the first observing run of the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitationalwave Observatory (LIGO). In particular, we searched for gravitational-wave signals from binary–neutron star systems with component masses Î  M 1, 3 [ ] and component dimensionl...
